Niagara Cutter CNC230 Carbide End Mill, NC Tolerance, TiN Coated, 2 Flutes, Square End, 3/4" Cutting Length, 1/4" Cutting Diameter

Niagara Cutter CNC230 Carbide End Mill, NC Tolerance, TiN Coated, 2 Flutes, Square End, 3/4

Niagara Cutter CNC230 Carbide End Mill, NC Tolerance, TiN Coated, 2 Flutes, Square End, 3/4

The Niagara Cutter CNC230 NC-style TiN-coated two-flute carbide square nose end mill has a plus-tolerance cutting diameter to match those of high-speed steel end mills, allowing an upgrade from high-speed steel to carbide and making the tool useful for milling keyways. The two flutes have better chip-carrying capacity than end mills with more flutes while offering additional support when the tool goes deep into the material in applications with a high depth of cut. The 30-degree helix angle supports general-purpose applications. It balances lower angles’ strong cutting edge for difficult-to-machine materials with higher angles’ increased cutting action.

The general-purpose TiN coating combines stability at high temperatures with hardness for wear protection, increasing tool life and performance compared to uncoated end mills. (TiN is suitable for a range of materials, but TiCN or uncoated end mills are recommended for machining aluminum.) The carbide substrate is harder than high-speed or cobalt steel, making it more wear resistant at high speeds and providing longer tool life. The tool’s square end creates sharp, unrounded cuts. The center-cutting design has cutting teeth at the end of the tool, so it can be fed into the workpiece like a drill bit. NC-style tools can be used on both the older Numerical Control (NC) machines, which are programmed using physical media such as magnetic tape, and the newer CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines, which are programmed using computers. Cutting diameter tolerance is +0.001" to -0.000". The tool has a Weldon shank on shank diameters larger than 3/8”.

End mills are designed to remove material and create multi-dimensional shapes and profiles. They have cutting edges along the outside diameter and flutes that remove chips from the cutting area and allow cooling fluids to enter. If heat is not reduced effectively, the tool’s cutting edges will dull and additional material buildup can occur. The number of flutes can range from two to eight. Two-flute designs offer the most efficient chip removal, but more flutes provide a smoother finish. The shank is the end of the tool held in place by a tool holder or machine. Center-cutting end mills can create three-dimensional shapes and profiles, and make plunge cuts similar to a drill bit. Non-center-cutting end mills are for applications such as peripheral milling and finishing, but cannot make plunge cuts.

Niagara Cutter has been designing and manufacturing precision cutting tools since 1954. Specializing in end mills, cutting mills, and saws, the company is based in New York and manufactures its tools at facilities in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. This allows the company control over production, from substrate to coating, which is essential for customers in a variety of industries, especially aerospace and automotive.

Alvord Polk 727-1 High-Speed Steel CNC Length Chucking Reamer, Right-Hand Spiral Flute, Round Shank, Titanium Nitride (TiN) Coated, 1/4 Inch Size Feature

  • Spiral flute reamers are recommended for reaming holes with interruptions, as they prevent damage to the workpiece edge and tool
  • CNC length tools are generally shorter than other machine tools. The shorter length makes for a more rigid tool, which minimizes vibration at the higher rpms available with CNC machines. Less vibration means more precision
  • Round shank tools are cylindrical and should be held in a good-quality toolholder in order to prevent the reamer from slipping in high torque applications, which can cause tool freeze, loss of accuracy, and tool damage
  • Titanium nitride (TiN) is a gold-colored ceramic coating that combines hardness and low friction to extend cutting tool life and permits faster cutting speeds than with uncoated tools
  • High-speed steel is a common general purpose steel for cutting tools, is compatible with a variety of materials, and tends to be lower in price than cobalt steel or carbide

Alvord Polk 727-1 High-Speed Steel CNC Length Chucking Reamer, Right-Hand Spiral Flute, Round Shank, Titanium Nitride (TiN) Coated, 1/4 Inch Size Overview

The Alvord Polk 727-1 right-hand spiral CNC length chucking reamer (also called a machine reamer) is a round shank tool made of high-speed steel with a gold-colored titanium nitride (TiN) ceramic coating, and is most commonly chosen for reaming interrupted cuts in materials like carbon steel, plastics, and aluminum. TiN is self-lubricating at high speeds, allowing faster cutting speeds than uncoated tools. This tool is meant for use in a CNC machine at high rpms with more rigidity and therefore reduced vibration and increased accuracy compared to a longer tool. The shorter length allows it to be run at higher speeds while staying accurate.

Spiral flute reamers are useful for interrupted cuts and in blind holes. Spiral reamers prevent whole flute contact with the leading edge in an interrupted cut, as in a keyway. This prevents damage to the interruption and reamer flute. Right-hand spiral style tools also pull chips away from the tip of the tool, instead of driving chips in front of the tool. Right-hand spiral reamers are also useful for reaming blind holes, since pulling chips out of the hole prevents clogging, which may cause tool damage.

For reamers in the 727-1 series with 0.0280 – 0.1561 inches diameter there are four flutes, and for 0.1562 – 0.5010 inches diameter there are six flutes. Tolerances are +0.0002 -0.0000 inches for all reamers in the 727-1 series.

Reamers are used to finish existing holes. When holes are created using common applications like drilling or punching they often have minute imperfections. Their roundness may be flawed, or their diameter may be slightly smaller than required. Reamers are made to exacting tolerances, so they can correct such errors and create precisely round holes of exacting dimensions. Reaming is often used before tapping screw threads.

Alvord Polk manufactures a broad family of cutting tools, brushes, and tooling components, following ISO 9001 standards for quality and environmental impact of their products. Their offices and manufacturing facilities have been located in the United States since 1881.

Niagara Cutter CNC430 Carbide End Mill, NC Tolerance, TiAlN Coated, 4 Flutes, Square End, 1-1/2" Cutting Length, 3/4" Cutting Diameter Feature

  • NC tolerance end mills have a plus-tolerance cutting diameter to match those of high-speed steel end mills, allowing an upgrade from high-speed steel to carbide without changing diameter
  • Four flutes produce a better finish than fewer flutes
  • Titanium aluminum nitride (TiAlN) coating lubricates the end mill for high-temperature stability and abrasion resistance at high cutting speeds, offering better heat resistance than TiN and TiCN coatings
  • Carbide can run at higher speeds than high-speed steel, resisting abrasion and high cutting temperatures
  • Square nose end mills (also called square end) create sharp, unrounded cuts

Niagara Cutter CNC430 Carbide End Mill, NC Tolerance, TiAlN Coated, 4 Flutes, Square End, 1-1/2" Cutting Length, 3/4" Cutting Diameter Overview

The Niagara Cutter CNC430 TiAlN-coated carbide NC-style square nose end mill has four flutes and a plus-tolerance cutting diameter to match those of high-speed steel end mills, allowing an upgrade from high-speed steel to carbide and making the tool useful for milling keyways. Four flutes produce a better finish than fewer flutes. The 30-degree helix angle supports general-purpose applications. It balances lower angles’ strong cutting edge for difficult-to-machine materials with higher angles’ increased cutting action.

The TiAlN coating resists heat better than TiN and TiCN coatings, increasing tool life and performance. It also offers increased hardness compared to TiN and may reduce the need for lubricants based on the application. (TiAlN is suitable for a range of materials, but TiCN or uncoated end mills are recommended for machining aluminum.) The carbide substrate is harder than high-speed or cobalt steel, making it more wear resistant at high speeds and providing longer tool life.
