Alvord Polk 727-1 High-Speed Steel CNC Length Chucking Reamer, Right-Hand Spiral Flute, Round Shank, Titanium Nitride (TiN) Coated, 1/4 Inch Size Feature
- Spiral flute reamers are recommended for reaming holes with interruptions, as they prevent damage to the workpiece edge and tool
- CNC length tools are generally shorter than other machine tools. The shorter length makes for a more rigid tool, which minimizes vibration at the higher rpms available with CNC machines. Less vibration means more precision
- Round shank tools are cylindrical and should be held in a good-quality toolholder in order to prevent the reamer from slipping in high torque applications, which can cause tool freeze, loss of accuracy, and tool damage
- Titanium nitride (TiN) is a gold-colored ceramic coating that combines hardness and low friction to extend cutting tool life and permits faster cutting speeds than with uncoated tools
- High-speed steel is a common general purpose steel for cutting tools, is compatible with a variety of materials, and tends to be lower in price than cobalt steel or carbide
Alvord Polk 727-1 High-Speed Steel CNC Length Chucking Reamer, Right-Hand Spiral Flute, Round Shank, Titanium Nitride (TiN) Coated, 1/4 Inch Size Overview
The Alvord Polk 727-1 right-hand spiral CNC length chucking reamer (also called a machine reamer) is a round shank tool made of high-speed steel with a gold-colored titanium nitride (TiN) ceramic coating, and is most commonly chosen for reaming interrupted cuts in materials like carbon steel, plastics, and aluminum. TiN is self-lubricating at high speeds, allowing faster cutting speeds than uncoated tools. This tool is meant for use in a CNC machine at high rpms with more rigidity and therefore reduced vibration and increased accuracy compared to a longer tool. The shorter length allows it to be run at higher speeds while staying accurate.
Spiral flute reamers are useful for interrupted cuts and in blind holes. Spiral reamers prevent whole flute contact with the leading edge in an interrupted cut, as in a keyway. This prevents damage to the interruption and reamer flute. Right-hand spiral style tools also pull chips away from the tip of the tool, instead of driving chips in front of the tool. Right-hand spiral reamers are also useful for reaming blind holes, since pulling chips out of the hole prevents clogging, which may cause tool damage.
For reamers in the 727-1 series with 0.0280 – 0.1561 inches diameter there are four flutes, and for 0.1562 – 0.5010 inches diameter there are six flutes. Tolerances are +0.0002 -0.0000 inches for all reamers in the 727-1 series.
Reamers are used to finish existing holes. When holes are created using common applications like drilling or punching they often have minute imperfections. Their roundness may be flawed, or their diameter may be slightly smaller than required. Reamers are made to exacting tolerances, so they can correct such errors and create precisely round holes of exacting dimensions. Reaming is often used before tapping screw threads.
Alvord Polk manufactures a broad family of cutting tools, brushes, and tooling components, following ISO 9001 standards for quality and environmental impact of their products. Their offices and manufacturing facilities have been located in the United States since 1881.
